Create story Herman Theodor Lundgren
Herman Theodor Lundgren (18?? - 1907), a Swedish immigrant and a naturalized Brazilian citizen, was a son of Johann Willhem Lundgren, a small manufacturer in Norrköping, Sweden. He is well-known as the founder of a network of stores, the Casas Pernambucanas, after he immigrated to Brazil. When Herman left Sweden in 1842, after a two-month journey across the Atlantic, he arrived in Rio de Janeiro with the purpose of enriching himself and finding adventure in South America. Besides Swedish he also spoke German and English and learned Portuguese quickly. He decided to live in Recife because he realized that there would be less competition for any business ventures. Some biographers believe the reason he moved to Recife in 1855 was the frequent outbreaks of yellow fever, a mosquito-borne tropical disease in Rio de Janeiro. In any event, he decided to live in Recife, the capital of Pernambuco in northeastern Brazil. As soon as he arrived in Recife in the year 1855 he applied for a job as an interpreter for immigrants to Recife. He became a well-known interpreter and later was named the Consul of Nordic countries in Recife. He started working as a broker in the shipping trade at the port in Recife. Herman realized that Brazilian gunpowder was very expensive because it had to be imported from other countries. He founded a gunpowder factory in Recife, the Pernambuco Powder Factory. The gunpowder was distributed through his own fleet of ships.Through his consul position Herman Lundgren met Anna Elizabeth Barmstedt in 1876 and they married in 1877. She was born in Denmark but was officially a subject of the German Kaiser. After her marriage to Herman Lundgren she became a Swedish and then a Brazilian citizen due to the dual citizenships of her husband. At the beginning of the twentieth century Herman Lundgren bought the Rodrigues Lima Company, a textile factory located in a place known as Paulista, part of the district of Olinda, now is known as a cultural city. The Paulista Textile Company, which started the retail selling of textiles in 1906, was initially named Casas Paulista, but after the defeat of the state of São Paulo during the 1932 revolution, the Lundgren family decided to change the names of their stores to Casas Pernambucanas. In 1915 Casas Pernambucanas had stores in southern Brazil (Porto Alegre and Florianópolis) and also in extreme northeastern Brazil (Teresina). They became famous in several states because they sold goods at low prices and they made frequent use of advertising, sometimes painting their ads on rocks, ravines, and the gates of road borders. The success of Casas Pernambucanas was due to the competence of his sons Frederico João and Arthur. In the 1970s, Casas Pernambucanas reached its greatest success with 800 stores and 40.000 employees throughout Brazil.
